Outlook 2003: Remove Ghost PSTs

When you attempt to open or remove a personal folder from your folder list, the following error messages may appear:

  • “The operation failed. An object could not be found.”
  • The set of folders could not be opened
  • You cannot close the mailbox that contains your calendar, contacts, and inbox.

Normally you can solve this error easily with a new Outlook profile but this is not always desirable. Last week I had discovered a free tool “Public Fix Profile for Outlook” from Publicshareware. This tool loads all registry keys of Outlook and provides you a clean overview of all registry settings, there is also a back-up function included.

The application automatically loads your Outlook profile registry keys when you open it. First make a Backup of your registry keys before removing keys! Simply browse to “Store Providers” to get the PST registry keys,  remove the “unnamed” PST files and start Outlook again to get rid of the Ghost PST files.

Very handy tool to have an overview of all Outlook profile settings.
